Monday's Weather

Watch the weather carefully and make your attendance decision based on your safety, not on convenience. I will be in class as usual, unless flooding renders my little car a low-budget imitation of the Titanic. We can accomplish a high-speed catch-up during our remaining classes.

This does not apply to other classes or instructors; this is my decision. Don't use it as a plea to skip another class.

The early turn-in of your research paper for extra credit is extended to 11:15 A.M. Wednesday, not beyond. Remember that as an 'umble adjunct I am not on campus very much, so give your paper to any of the many nice folks in the office and ask them to save it for me. If you do, make and keep a hard copy -- no storage devices, please -- for yourself in case the first copy goes amiss; I can grade only that which is placed into my hands. Keeping extra copies of your work is a good practice in any case, both in college and in your career.

English 1301, Monday, 16 April 2012

For the balance of term, these notes are also posted to angryverbs.blogspot.com, as they have been all term.

Also, when emailing me, use BOTH my addresses; as an adjunct I don't access the Angelina site every day.

Monday night:

A. Expository writing

1. Continue figurative language (handout)

a. Symbols

i. Universal / cultural

ii. Local / personal / authorial

b. Allegory

c. Fable, parable, myth

d. Allusions

B. Poem for analysis: "Stoppy by Woods on a Snowy Evening," Robert Frost, handout.

1. We will close-read this for symbols (and was Mr. Frost being coy when he insisted the poem was to be taken literally?).

2. Consider the matter of the commas in line 13, and how their use affects meaning.

3. Anticipate an essay, but this will not be assigned until next week.

C. Research papers

1. The one-on-one consultations with the instructor are officially over; however, I will waive my own rule on this occasion and see what I can do for you.

2. Ad lib work in library to 8:40 P.M.

Reminders:

The 16th is your due-date for your research paper for an extra 10 points for early submission.

The 23rd is your official due-date.

The 30th is your NLT (not later than) date. No research papers will be accepted after this date; given that the assignment was made in January, all the tiresome excuses (my printer broke; you can ask my parents, and so on) are invalid.

Bibliographies -- As noted several times in class, some of you are using APA, Chicago, or other styles, but we are following the MLA. I think this slippages comes from using bibiography programs on the 'puter, which is excellent, but be sure you instruct the device to work your bibliography / works cited as MLA.

Classes for Monday, 9 April

If you are one of the few who ever read angryverbs.blogspot.com, please access Blackboard and see if this message also appears there.

Thanks!

2:45 P.M.

Dear Students:

This morning I attended my first-ever Blackboard class, and will now make the transition to this electronic mystery. Please note that for the remainder of this semester all notes will also be posted on angryverbs.com. Please forgive my misadventures in formatting.

On Monday a good, typed rough draft, complete with works cited, of your research paper is due for class sharing. Don't John Wayne this; have me look at it and make general comments (I'm not going to proof-read your paper). Help each other -- I want you to know the MLA format for your success in college and in your career.

Then you will suffer...um...enjoy my brilliant discussion on SYMBOLISM and ALLEGORY, which will help you prepare for your next essay. I have a handout for you to mark up, and of course will talk entirely too long.

Wal-Mart is on Low Ground

Hey, if you can make it to Wal-Mart then you can splash to class, right?

Monday Night, English 1302, 2 April

As of now (3:30 P.M.) I have heard nothing of road closures, so I will be on campus around 5:00 P.M. and available for one-on-one consultation regarding your research paper.

Make a wise decision based on safety: if your routes of travel are flooded or if heavy weather threatens, then by all means remain on high ground and do not endanger yourself.  An absence tonight will not count against you; however, the due-dates for your research paper are not being re-set.
